The North Sea's Troll field will produce more gas in 2024 than ever before, according to Stator Nov 28. At the same time, carbon dioxide emissions are significantly reduced.

The Troll field in the North Sea sets historical production records with 42.5bcm of gas produced in 2024. This is the highest annual production in the field's history, up nearly 10% from the previous record of 38.8 Bscm in 2022.

With production at record highs in 2024, the Troll field confirmed its position as a pillar of European energy security. The field helps provide a steady supply of gas to millions of households and is important to European industry. This milestone was the result of decades. We have targeted the recovery of Troll's oil and gas resources in an efficient and sustainable manner, and it is worthwhile to be able to provide such a large volume of gas when Europe needs it most, said Kjetil Hove, Executive VP E&P.

The process plants at Troll A and Colesones have been electrified since their start-up in 1996. Gas from the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) is sourced locally and the emissions from production and transportation are the lowest in the industry.

Riser replacement on Troll B also played an important role in maximizing production. Troll A has been a major contributor to NCS gas production since commissioning in 1996. Production expands to the gas cap in the west of the reservoir in 2021, driven by large subsea developments. Even after 28 years of production, this expansion has helped boost production.

In 2024, Troll B and C platforms will be partially electrified. This results in a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in 2024. It is preliminarily estimated that the emission will be reduced by 15% to about 90000 tons by 2024. In addition, the gas processing plant atfacility has undergone significant upgrades in recent years. Through close cooperation with operator Gasco, capacity has increased from 144.5 mmscm per day to 156 mmscm. These upgrades have proven to be a significant contributor to production records.

The Troll field, located in the northern North Sea, is the largest NCS field and its licensees include Equator, Petro, NorShell, TotalEnergy and ConcoPhillips. Equator is the operator of the Troll A, Troll B, Troll C platform and the Landing Pipeline. Equinor expects that the Troll field could be recovered for at least 70 years due to a huge gas reservoir 1400 metres below sea level.
